CNN Heroes - Cast Your Vote

Filed under:

I have always liked the 'CNN Heroes' features. If you're not familiar with 'CNN Heroes' they are brief profiles of your everyday citizen of the world who has taken steps to create extraordinary and usually innovative programs that help solve a problem.

Now, there is a contest, to choose the '2008 CNN Hero of the Year.' Everyone can vote for their favorite and the winner will be revealed during a special Thanksgiving night show - 'CNN Heroes an All Star Tribute' and will receive $100,000. So it pays to be a hero too!

Have you been watching most of the news lately?

I have, but now I'm turning the volume way down and focusing on the positive stories out there.

I want my mind to absorb the stories that affirm what's possible and good about the human condition. What I know is that each of us has infinite possibilities even if we aren't aware of what they are at any given moment.

So, who's YOUR hero?

Get Your Guns … Before Obama Takes Them Away!

You don't see people running out to get guns in black communities and big cities. Why? In those neighborhoods, guns are more commonly used by criminals and cops.

The great secret behind the recent gun boom is that the majority of these guns flying off the shelves are being bought in the South and in Red States.

You might remember, when Clinton took office way back when, the EXACT same thing happened. The NRA told voters that Clinton would take everyone's guns away and used the Clinton assault weapons ban as evidence. Now, Rednecks and NRA members are maxing out their credit cards on guns and ammo again.

If that's not "clinging to your guns," I don't know what is?

Wake up people, Obama's not gonna take your guns even if he really, really wanted to.

Obama: The Need to Separate Church and State

Here is an example of why President-elect Barack Obama may be the perfect fit for a country too often swayed by religious bias. In this video from June 2006, he explains his religious perspective and comments on the... gasp, dangers of sectarianism!!! For those who still question his religious association, this video is for you.

Some highlights from his speech include:

"Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translates their concerns into universal rather than religion-specific values. What do I mean by this? It requires that their proposals be subject to argument and amenable to reason"

"I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, to take one example, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I can't simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all. Now this is going to be difficult for some who believe in the inerrancy of the Bible as many evangelicals do. But in a pluralistic society, we have no choice."

As far as I'm concerned, Obama's speech should be applied across the board (I'm talking to you Californians who overturned Proposition 8). While we're at it, the Ten Commandments should not be displayed in judicial buildings, there shouldn't be prayer in schools, and the United States shouldn't be governed by individuals whose actions are dictated by their religious inclinations. Imagine that...

Power to The People @ Change.gov

After you finish reading this, I suggest that you head on over to Change.gov, President-elect Barack Obama's official Web site.

As you might expect, its design is clean and easy to navigate. On it you will find information about the Obama administration's agenda, the inauguration, news headlines and all sorts of information related to the transition now in progress.

But most intriguing to me, is that if you would like to work for the Obama administration, Change.gov is where you sign up to begin the process. Go to Change.gov, click on 'Jobs' and then, fill in your information. ...

Another program of interest is the "America Serves" initiative:

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation's challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in under served schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps.

If Obama is being described as the first "internet President," then we are surely the first "internet electorate." This ease of access to my soon-to-be Executive Branch excites me.

Before Barack, We Had King Richard

Before "In Living Color" and "Chappelle's Show" we had just four episodes of this wonderful show.

"The Richard Pryor Show."

The network censors
were all over Pryor in 1977.

Yup, that's Marsha Warfield and others. Classic sketch.

Michelle Obama Tops Power List - We Pick ‘Em, You Rank ‘Em

History was made this week with one of the most important elections in our nation's history. It proved the power of voting and that true democracy means exercising the power of the vote. On that note, BlackVoices also wants your vote. Each week we compile a list of individuals (some famous and some not) that we think have wielded power in their own fields that week.

Since you may disagree with some of our rankings, we decided to make the Power List interactive -- so you can tell us how you'd rank our choices. Check out the "This Week's List" to the right of this posting.

Aside from the historic election of the first black president, British Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton is now a world champion. Last Sunday Hamilton came in fifth place at the Brazilian Grand Prix securing the world champion title making the youngest to ever win it and the only Black man to ever hold the title.

Michelle Obama will soon be the first lady of the United States. Enough said. That's power right there.

David Alan Grier, a comedian, is starring in the new Comedy show on Comedy Central called "Chocolate News." What do you think of it? Samuel L. Jackson is staring along Bernie Mac in the new comedy movie Soul Men. Jackson obviously has the power to be in every single move that comes out ever.

You might not know Cynthia McKinney, but she is the leader of the Green Party and presidential candidate in this year's election and a powerful female political figure of the future. We want to give her props for going against Barack, despite being overshadowed and hanging in there to the end.

Obama Inauguration Ticket Info

Last night, I booked my flight to Washington, DC so that I will be in place for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration. I don't have tickets to any events yet, but to be present for such a momentous occasion is irresistible. To top it all off, I am from D.C. and my mom still lives there. There is no way I would allow her to have all the fun to herself.

Tickets for the inauguration ARE FREE and are being distributed by each congressional office on a first come first served basis. You must CALL THE OFFICE and request one or two tickets. Please note that many offices around the country are closing their lists TODAY.

You can find out who your congressional representative is by clicking this link.

If you need to find out you Zip + 4 click on this link. The Seattle Post Intelligencer has a great article entitled: 'Want to go to Obama's inauguration? 5 things you need to know':
Keep an eye out for ticket scams, like this site. Scam!

McAlvanah forwarded a press release from the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies warning residents nationwide to be wary of rogue Web sites that claim to have inaugural tickets. They don't. The committee assures all tickets for the swearing-in ceremony a) will be distributed by congressional offices </
