Obama’s European Report Card

President Obama gave himself a good grade reflecting on his first global economic summit in his weekly address filmed aboard Air Force One.

It's impossible to tell at this point the effectiveness of Obama's performance. Only the results we see down the road - greater international cooperation between nations in fighting terrorism, fixing the global economy and protecting the environment - will determine if this was a first step fixing America's broken image abroad or just a European holiday and photo op with the queen.

Most of the news reports I saw on the summit were light on the substance of what was accomplished in London last week. Perhaps that's because few tangible agreements outside of the commitment to spend a trillion dollars to help smaller countries were achieved.

I got real tired of the news organizations passing off glowing reviews of Michelle Obama wowing a class of schoolgirls as real news in these serious times.

But I guess its okay for now. The president made the solid case that the world's richest countries have to look beyond their own narrow interests if they are to pull out of this economic nosedive.

President Obama planted seeds of international cooperation in London. Let's give some time to see if anything grows from the effort.

Urban League to Obama: No Free Pass

This year, the annual 'State of Black America' report from the National Urban League delivers a message to President Obama: We are behind you, but don't expect a free pass from us.

Calling these the "best of times and the worst of times" for black America, the 2009 report says the bad economic times are hitting African Americans disproportionately.

None of this should come as a surprise to black folks. ...

+ Read More About the Report

But what makes this report somewhat enlightening is that it attempts to put some statistical underpinnings to what we all know.

Called the National Urban League's Equality Index, the measurement is a statistical gauge of the disparities between blacks and whites across five categories: economics, education, health, civic engagement and social justice.

According to the report, between 2003 and 2007 the poverty rate and home ownership rate declined for blacks but increased for whites. Even as both groups made progress in educational attainment, the progress was slower for blacks.

National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said in the report that Obama's election doesn't mean that the fight for civil rights is won.

"Instead, it's more important than ever that the National Urban League and other organizations and individuals committed to positive change work even harder to lift up our communities and move this country forward," Morial said.

It's a legitimate, but simplistic point. Did anyone ever say Obama's election meant the fight for civil rights was over?

Diddy Lets His Brilliance Show in Interview

Push past the "swagga," the mind-swirling name changes and the amped-up persona as the musical King of Bling, and you'll find that Sean Combs is brilliant. In a quietly riveting new interview pegged to the 12th anniversary of the death of Biggie Smalls, aka Christopher Wallace, blogger Barry Michael Cooper conducts a wide-ranging interview that gives those of us watching an up-close look at what excellence and creative vision look like. We learn how Combs's mind works, and his process is illuminating.

This segment on the making of 'Ready to Die' is getting the most hype because Combs confirms that on one of the interludes, Biggie is actually having sex. But I suggest you listen to how Combs guides Biggie's music choices and why.

Again, in this segment, listen to how Combs spends his spare time making beats, perfecting his ear and his producing skills. He closely studied how movies were put together and scored. He says he didn't want to wait for things to happen.

My constant frustration with so many high-profile black entertainers and athletes is that they don't emphasize the hard work, focus and discipline it takes to achieve success. Cooper's interview is a great step in the right direction. I left the following comment for him: "This is a remarkable post and interview. This is what success looks like when the lights go down. I hope this interview inspires countless young people to hunker down and become excellent at something they love to do. Peace." Do yourself a favor and watch this interview. I found it inspiring. I hope you do, too.

Obama: Catching His Breath

Never in our lifetimes have we seen so many challenges thrown at a new president so quickly.

Thanks to the mismanagement of the Bush Administration, President Barack Obama has been forced to to hit the ground at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. running from day one - enacting a massive economic stimulus plan, engineering a design to end the war in Iraq and attempting to reduce the $1.3 trillion deficit. ...

So President Obama used his weekly address this week to simply catch his breath and reassure Americans that the whirlwind of activity in his first few weeks of office will bring the change we voted for.

;We're moving forward with an economic agenda that will jumpstart job creation, restart lending, relieve responsible homeowners, and address the long-term economic challenges of our time: the cost of health care, our dependence on oil, and the state of our schools,"
Obama said.

Only time will tell whether Obama's policies will fix all of what ails the nation. But his swift decisive actions to clean up the mess left behind must be given a chance to work.

Robin Williams: A Get Well Card for a Very Funny Man

There's no doubt Robin Williams will find a way to make this funny, but I'm not going to joke (right now) about him undergoing heart surgery. When he gets well, I'm sure the jokes will fly out of his forever-recovering-from-something mouth.

Williams, 57, has been somewhere in the comic lexicon for most of our lives and has become a de facto Bob Hope. It's easy to remember him as the lovable Mork from 'Mork & Mindy.' It's also easy to bring up his work as the goofy doctor in 'Patch Adams.' And the movie we're more than willing to keep watching is the cable mainstay 'Good Will Hunting,' for which Williams won an Oscar for best supporting actor performing opposite a young Matt Damon.

But Robin's roots lie somewhere between the chitlin' circuit and 'Soul Train.'

What I mean by that is the granddaddy of all modern comics, Richard Pryor, gave him his start. Peep this hysterical scene where Williams helps Rich uncover some truth then helps hide it. ...

Obama Doing Right by His People

President Barack Obama is scheduled to meet with his former colleagues from the Congressional Black Caucus. Even though the all-Democratic CBC supported Obama during his presidential run, some members are hinting they will grill Obama to make sure black folks don't slip off his agenda.

I hope they think better of it because going by an early glance of his budget, President Obama is keeping the needs of black America foremost in his priorities. ...

An early review of Obama's proposed budget spending shows increased allocations for Americans getting unemployment benefits.

Obama's budget will also make it easier for low-income Americans, of which blacks represent a disproportionately large share of the population, to protect theri futures. Under Obama's proposal, low income Americans who start a retirement account with $1,000 would receive a matching $500 for government funds.

Obama also plans to spend more for people needing job training and for ex-offenders, again a population black people are overrepresented in.

The president has frustrated some supporters because he almost never brings race to the table in his public comments. But that doesn't mean he isn't instituting policies that will benefit minorities.

Hopefully members of the CBC will do their homework before the meeting with President Obama, (and that is not a given - I worked on Capitol Hill for the Associated Press). If they do, they will see that Obama hasn't forgotten his black half.

The Funniest PSA You Will Ever See On A Father’s Involvement

I saw this a few weeks ago, and I just had to post it. The video has a great message, but the funniest part has to be the brother's exaggerated movements. I nearly died around the 7 second mark at his face. Tell me that isn't the funniet face you have ever seen!

According to the Ad Council...

More than 79% of Americans feel "the most significant family or social problem facing America is the physical absence of the father from the home." Research shows that the lack of a father in the home correlates closely with crime, educational and emotional problems, teenage pregnancy, and drug and alcohol abuse.

In an effort to show dads the critical role they play in their children's lives, the Ad Council has partnered with the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and volunteer ad agency Campbell-Ewald to create a new PSA campaign that communicates to fathers that their presence is essential to their children's well-being. The campaign provides fathers with the information they need to become better dads.

Trinidad Carnival - Not Hating on Mardi Gras, But My, My …

Okay, while everybody is getting their swerve on in New Orleans (and you gotta applaud the city for its spirit, after what it's been through), the Caribbean is kickstarting their own get down in Port-of-Spain with their own Carnival celebration.

Hey, I did it in 2007 and my goodness...I've never been to a party like that in my life, my last lifetime, or the lifetime before that. I'm just so sad I couldn't make it this year to participate in the most colorful, sexually-driven confusion tht I've ever seen.

So for those of us who have to miss our chance to visit a fantasy world called Reckless Abandon, here's a sample courtesy of YouTube.

Obama Warns Mayors About Wasting Stimulus Money

President Obama addressed something that the American people may not be familiar with given the last eight years.

He actually threatened to "call out" federal agencies and the nation's mayors if they wastefully spend the money allocated from the stimulus package. What an idea, to finally have some accountability! ...

Some of the speech's highlights...

"I want to be clear about this, we cannot tolerate business as usual. Not in Washington, not in our state capitals, not in America's cities and towns. We will use the new tools that the recovery act gives us to watch the taxpayers money with more rigor and transparency than ever..."
"If a federal agency proposes a project that will waste that money, I will not hesitate to call them out on it and put a stop to it. I want everybody here to be on notice that if a local government does the same, I will call them out on it and use the full power of my office and our administration to stop it. We have asked for the unprecedented trust of the American people to deal boldly with the greatest economic crisis we've seen in decades."

Who’ll Sweat To End Of Basketball Season?

It's the time of the year when basketball coaches are looking over their shoulder for the unemployment ax. Tennessee State started the firing season by cutting ties with coach Cy Alexander on February 6 and naming Mark Pittman interim coach. Alexander, who was in his sixth season at TSU, went 67-107 overall and 48-56 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

In 24 years as a coach, including a successful run at South Carolina State, Alexander has a career record of 344-306. TSU went 15-17, 10-10 in the OVC with an appearance in the tournament championship game in 2008, but never developed into a consistent winner. For 2-24 N.C. Central, the situation is pretty dire, too.

Henry Dickerson's Eagles are going to finish their second Division I season much like the first with more than 20 losses. Central is struggling with no conference affiliation after leaving Division II, a killer road schedule and flagging support for those rare home games. Speculation is rampant about Dickerson being on the outs and being replaced by assistant LeVelle Moton, an NCCU alum who has been on the Eagles bench for two seasons.

Job security may be less of an issue at N.C. A&T, where Jerry Eaves is trying to get the Aggies past .500 for the first time during his six-year tenure. A&T had a five-game win streak, including three in a row on the road to get to 13-13, two victories shy of last season's 15-16 mark. If the Aggies can keep the momentum and get past the first round of next month's tournament, Eaves may have earned another season.

Never Too Late for Change: Former KKK Member Apologizes to Congressman John Lewis

I saw this on CNN a couple of days ago and say what you will, but I love the sentiment. You can never downplay the importance of doing the right thing, no matter how long it takes for that to actually come to fruition. In 1961, Elwin Wilson, a former KKK member assaulted Congressman John Lewis and a group of black college students at a South Carolina bus stop. Years later he is making amends...

What are your thoughts on his apology? Was it sincere or was it too late?

Jesse Lee Paterson, Get Real!

How does Tom Daschle's tax trouble turn into a diatribe on the socialist agenda of racist and militant black Americans?

Simple, just have one of FOX's favorite house negroes, Jesse Lee Paterson, answer a question... any question.

The drivel that this man continues to spew on television is absolutely absurd. His presence is borderline comical as he actually goes out of his way to progressively top his nonsensical statements.

Here are just a few of his winning quotes:

"I think one thing we need to clear up... I think one thing we all agree upon is that Barack Obama was elected by mostly black racists and white guilty people. Most black Americans, 96 percent of them, are racist towards white Americans and white folks feel guilty and they are afraid of being called racists."

And of course...

"As we move on with Barack Obama being in there, you're not going to be able to speak out against him at all unless you're being called a racist."

FOX get serious. You can't get any black man, put him on a panel and act like he somehow represents black people. But sadly, nothing more can be expected from this parody of a news channel.

Meet Michael Steele: New Republican Leader

We are just a month into 2009 and African-Americans are changing the political landscape of America. On Friday, the Republican party, in a surprising move that had been rumored for weeks, chose the first black national chairman in its history.

The choice marked no less than "the dawn of a new party," the new GOP chairman, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele declared . ...

Republicans chose Steele over four other candidates, including former President George W. Bush's hand-picked GOP chief, who bowed out declaring, "Obviously the winds of change are blowing."

Steele takes the helm of a beleaguered Republican Party that is trying to recover after crushing defeats in November's national elections that gave Democrats control of Congress put Barack Obama in the White House.

GOP delegates erupted in cheers and applause when his victory was announced, but it took six ballots to get there.

He'll serve a two-year term.

Snowbama: Barack Says Let It Snow

Funny how President Obama's first public dust up since taking office came as a result of a D.C. snow storm.

Our new president gently chided his new home city for closing schools when the nation's capitol was hit by less than 3 inches of snow Tuesday evening. The response on local talk radio was sudden and fierce as DC folks called in to defend their snow aversion. ...

"Can I make a comment that is unrelated to the economy very quickly?" the new president told reporters at a gathering with business leaders. "And it has to do with Washington. My children's school was cancelled today. Because of, what? Some ice?"

The president said he wasn't the only one who was incredulous.

"As my children pointed out, in Chicago, school is never cancelled," Obama said to laughter.

"In fact, my seven-year-old pointed out that you'd go outside for recess. You wouldn't even stay indoors. So, I don't know. We're going to have to try to apply some flinty Chicago toughness." SOURCE

As a native New Yorker now living in DC, I feel President Obama's pain.

This little dusting is nothing like the snow storms that hit the New York City area from time to time - not to mention the blizzards that hit Chicago.

But lets give DC residents a break. They complain that the city is hilly and that school buses have trouble negotiating snowy and icy streets. The also say that as in "international city", DC transplants lose their minds and (any driving ability) they have at the sight of the first snow flake.

So while you are right Mr. President. I would advise you not to compare your hometown to DC everytime you start missing Chicago. The next thing you know, you will be complaining about the awful excuse for pizza they serve here.

Obama Snow Day

Baker Blasts Blacks With ‘Drunken Negro Head’ Cookies

From the "It Shouldn't Even Surprise Us" file:

Now that there's a black president in the White House, we're seeing the latest of the barrage of anti-black insults that are no doubt likely from people who really believe they're being funny. Case in point, Lafayette French Pastry in Manhattan has decided to craft what it calls "Drunken Negro Head" cookies in 'honor' of President Obama.

Truth is, if you know your history, the pictures of the cookies look more like the autopsy photos of Emmit Till.

Look, I watch South Park just as much as anyone else so stuff like this is what it is. But at the same time, I've got a feeling that in a strange, ironic way, racist humor could become en vogue with the perpetrators of it simply apologizing after they get their 15 minutes of fame, just like Lafayette owner Ted Kefalinos did. I guess Don Imus beat him on his original idea. ...

All I can say is, that ain't cute man. If someone were creating stereotypical images and treats of your ethnic group and making a profit from it, how would you feel?

Seeing Blacks as Individuals Could Cure Racism

testfaces

The most ravaging aspect of racism and bigotry is that they allow the racist or the bigot to strip away all nuance of humanity from entire groups of people. And when we don't see the "other" as human, we can choose to do horrible things without much self-reflection. Wired magazine features a study claiming that if we can distinguish each new person we see as an individual, then bias toward his or her racial group diminishes:
As the first African American president in U.S. history takes office, researchers have shown that it may be possible to scientifically reduce racial bias.

After being trained to distinguish between similar black male faces, Caucasian test subjects showed greater racial tolerance on a test designed to measure unconscious bias. ...

The results are still preliminary, have yet to be replicated, and the real-world effects of reducing bias in a controlled laboratory setting are not clear. But for all those caveats, the findings add to a growing body of research suggesting that science can battle racism.

"Any time you can get people to treat people as individuals, you reduce the effect of stereotypes," said Brown University cognitive scientist Michael Tarr. "It won't solve racism, but it could have profound real-world effects." Researchers Try to Cure Racism, Wired
I recommend that you read the entire article for yourself. And maybe you will join me in thinking about the ways we fail to see others as individuals.

Obama Manages Expectations - Weekly YouTube Address

In his first weekly address since the inauguration, President Barack Obama continued the delicate balancing act of setting out his agenda for a national economic recovery while managing expectations. ...

As Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan takes shape, the president gave a nod to increasing access to clean energy, lowering health care costs and protecting health care insurance, improving schools, making college more affordable, repairing roads and mass transportation options and expanding access to broadband.

All Americans, no matter their political party, economic status or skin color, will benefit from some aspect of the plan - if it goes off according to plan.

But the most important issue that the president has included is the acknowledgment that it might not go off according to plan and that "a bad situation could become dramatically worse" if nothing were done.

Again, as he has done through his meteoric rise to the most powerful position in the world, Obama is proving his greatest strength is his inspirational yet common sense approach to improving the nation.

Arrest Made In Alexis Glover Murder Case

A 13-year-old developmentally-disabled girl disappeared last Wednesday from the parking lot of the Manassas, VA Central Community Library.

Alexis Glover or "Lexie" was known to just vanish and had previously worn a GPS bracelet for her own safety. Her disappearance launched an extensive police search with dogs, helicopters, posted flyers and volunteers going door-to-door. Because of her condition, it was believed that Alexis was hiding from police, thinking that she was in trouble.

Due to other medical issues, the community searched diligently in hopes of getting her much-needed medication.

Sadly, Lexie's body was found in a creek eight miles away from the library and two days after she was reported missing.

The girl's mom spoke to reporters a few days ago pleading with people to come forward with any information leading to the person(s) connected with her daughter's death.

However, on Tuesday night, 44-year-old Alfreedia Glover, the adoptive mother of Alexis was arrested for felony, child neglect and for filing a false police report. This comes after police searched cars, property, etc.

Police believe that Alexis Glover was murdered at an unknown location, and her body was dumped in Woodbridge. As of now, no murder charges have been filed in Glover's death.

Alfreedia Glover is currently being held without bond.

Hannity and…Sharpton? You Gotta Be Kidding Me!

A journalist I have lot of respect for once called Sean Hannity a "condescending ball of hate," and having listened to some of the things he's said, I'd have a hard time disagreeing with him. But like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, Hannity says things so preposterous and full of shock-value, I don't even think he believes the words coming out of his loud mouth.

However, since his liberal co-host Alan Colmes split from their FOX News sideshow Hannity and Colmes, little Sean doesn't have anyone to pick on.

Wait a tick. What's that? Who's joining Hannity for a one night engagement? Well I'll be damned, none other than the Rev. Al Sharpton!!! ...

Yo, I bullsh*t you not, Sharpton, head of the National Action Network is going to be the liberal punching bag for all the right wing nutcases Monday night, filling the spot Colmes once sorrowfully occupied (the poor guy looked like he lost weight with every show).

Now, Sharpton and Hannity have less in common than Gandhi and Hitler, but honestly, strange combinations like that make for great television. They have also kept the people who make Pepto Bismol in business for years.

I don't know what they could possibly have to talk about other than Hannity's disdain for anything that isn't in an all-white gated community. But to back them up, classic rocker Meatloaf ("Two Out of Three Ain't Bad") will fill one of the hot seats; and so will dingbat McCarthyism advocate Rep. Michelle Bachman (look her up, she's two fries short of a Happy Meal).

Look, I gotta admit, I'm not a frequent watcher of Faux News, but this might be worth tuning in, if nothing else for Hannity to finally snivel to Sharpton how pissed he is, despite his best efforts, that there will be a black man occupying the White House on Jan. 20.

Maybe Rev. Al will bring him a complimentary copy of Birth of a Nation.

Mother’s Outrage: Hospital Throws Baby’s Body In Trash

Yesterday, we told you the gruesome story of how a NJ hospital disposed of a deceased baby in the trash. Well now, the story has taken a sad turn.

It was announced Wednesday night that the search for the remains of a Jersey City baby has moved to Kentucky, but police fear that the corpse has already been incinerated. Details

Please read below to get the full story of this horrifying tale.

We've all heard about medical mistakes before but what happened to one mother in New Jersey is beyond comprehension. Kaylnn Moore told reporters in New York yesterday that when she went into labor a month early on December 21, doctors at Christ Hospital in Jersey decided to do a C-section.

But instead of getting her Christmas miracle, a healthy baby boy named Bashir, Moore's son was stillborn. Devastated, the young mother left her baby's remains in the care of the hospital and went home. When she came back to claim him, the hospital couldn't find his body. That's right, you heard me, the Christ Hospital claimed it couldn't find Bashir. ...

How does a hospital lose an infant's body?

If that wasn't bad enough, Moore says police told her that her son had accidentally been thrown in the trash; tossed away like garbage. How in the world could that happen? Surely, medical professionals can tell the difference between a little black boy and a pile of trash, right? Apparently, not because now officials are searching dumps in New Jersey and Pennsylvania looking for Bashir's remains.

It makes me wonder about the state of health care in this country. And, it should make you think the next time you check in the hospital.

Obama YouTube Address - Inspirational Words a Prelude to Action

President Obama's inspirational words relayed in his weekly YouTube address find a nation that is hurting and in search for answers.

So we can all hope and pray that Obama's call for sharing sacrifice to help those in need doesn't fall on deaf or uncaring ears. Obama's historic victory in November would seem to put him in a perfect position to deliver such a message. ...

"This season of giving should also be a time to renew a sense of common purpose and shared citizenship," he says. "Now more than ever, we must rededicate ourselves to the notion that we share a common destiny as Americans - that I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper. Now, we must all do our part to serve one another; to seek new ideas and new innovation; and to start a new chapter for our great country."

His personal history is one of self sacrifice. With his Harvard degree, Obama could have chosen many well paying jobs during his youth. But he moved to Chicago to work as a community organizer, helping people who were far less fortunate. Just compare his background to that of the current White House occupant (failed oilman, failed baseball team owner) and the contrast is striking.

However, Obama faces a daunting task in pulling this country together. And hopefully his actions will ignite a firestorm of giving and service among the nation's youth, a constituency that helped forge his election win.

Rarely has the need been so great and the stakes so high.

Young Black Men Killing One Another - Open Thread

Young black men are being shot and killed at a rate 40 percent higher than in 2000, according to a new study, and something has to be done about it.

In 2007, 426 black males between the ages of 14 and 17 were killed in gun crimes in the U.S., the study shows.

This comes even though the overall rate of homicide in the United States remains relatively low.

According to the AP, the study by criminologists at Northeastern University in Boston partly blamed Bush administration's cuts to local police and juvenile crime prevention programs, like D.A.R.E., for the surge. And guns were the most common weapon.

Let's start the discussion, what do you think we need to do about this and what can our next president do?

Take the poll and comment below.

Obama YouTube Address - The White House Science & Tech Nerds

I like most Americans wouldn't know the key members of President-elect Obama's science and technology team if I tripped over them in an empty bar.

And that's too bad because while these members of Obama's core advisers lack the sexy sizzle of top diplomats, war strategists or economists, none will be as important in drawing the blueprint for our nation's scientific and technological achievement. ...

Therefore the actual resumes of Dr. John Holdren as Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Dr. Jane Lubchenco as nominee for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Dr. Eric Lander, as co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) interest me far less than the direction Obama said he will travel when it comes to science.

And so far his direction is a good one.

The debate over stem cell research was the most visible science-related topic to cross the public's view and President Bush flubbed it by allowing religious concerns to trump scientific advancement by restricting embryonic stem cell research.

How can expect the best and brightest minds in science to want to work for the government when shackled by Bush's cave-in to the anti-abortion lobby?

Obama has stated he supports the creation of new stem cells from embryos created for in vitro fertilization treatments that would otherwise be discarded.

That is good. Now government scientists will be free to deliver on the promise of treatments for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, strokes, burns and more that were doomed by Bush's science blindspot.

In His Final Act, Bush Makes Good - Sorta

Remember at the end of Return of the Jedi, when Darth Vader decides to redeem his treacherous behavior? You know, seeing his son Luke Skywalker being tortured by Force lightning blazing from Emperor Palpatine's fingertips, he decides to mend decades of cosmic tyranny, murder and destruction by grabbing his boss and dropping him into a photon reactor, thereby saving the galaxy.

Well, President Bush gave us a taste of that Friday when he decided to hand the auto companies $17.4 billion, and a chance at survival. Here, give a listen. ...

Obama Right to Blast Housing Mess in YouTube Address

All that will ultimately matter to Americans is whether President-elect Obama picked the right guy in Shaun Donovan to fix the nation's housing mess. The President-elect highlighted his choice and this important issue in his weekly YouTube address.

But give Obama credit for recognizing a crisis that has the potential to put countless numbers of families on the street in a tidal wave of home foreclosures over the next few years. ...

In announcing his pick of Donovan, a New York City housing official, to head the federal department Housing and Urban Development, Obama correctly stated that to end the nation's economic crisis, we have to address the mortgage crisis first.

It won't be easy. On the same weekend of Obama's announcement, 60 Minutes aired an excellent report on the looming "second wave" of massive home foreclosures expected to rock our economy through the year 2011.

It was good to hear Obama point a finger of blame at those responsible for this mess, the greedy individuals who knew damn well they couldn't afford to homes they were purchasing but charged forward anyway.

These reckless people will be first in line when the bailout money starts flowing while hard working people who took second jobs, scrimped and saved, and did all the right things to avoid foreclosure will get no government-backed goodies.

The president-elect sees Mr. Donovan as the right man for the job. I, for one, hope he is right.

President Bush’s Iraqi Bob-And-Weave!

On Sunday, President George W. Bush got a somewhat "unwarm" welcome during his unannounced visit to Iraq.

Bush got a size-10 reminder of the intense opposition to his policies when a man threw two shoes at him - one after another - during a news conference with Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. "This is the end!" shouted the man, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt.

Bush ducked both throws and neither leader was hit.

You have to admit this Iraqi journalist was BOLD. And whether you agree or disagree with him, you have to acknowledge his tenacity for getting his point across. Not only did he throw one shoe, but then bent down and threw another.

If you throw both shoes, what will you wear home once you are escorted out of the press conference?

Students Help School Switch Name to… Barack Obama Elementary

Some enterprising students at Ludlum Elementary, in Long Island have helped change the name of their school to Barack Obama Elementary. If nothing else, this is a wonderful reflection of the example president-elect Obama has set for youth the world over.

Obama now joins the ranks of other prominent African Americans such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Paul Robeson, Marcus Garvey and others who have this distinction. Kudos to those kids and kudos to this country for finally seeking change.

Big Ups to Myron Rolle: The New Black Rhodes Scholar

Very quick shout out, particularly in an age when so many negative stats come out about black males and education. This time, we've got someone who shoots down the stereotypes and lifts us all up a notch.

Much love to Myron Rolle, a Florida State University safety who now gets a chance to study at Oxford and be in the company of some of the best and brightest in history including ex-president Bill Clinton, political commentator and journalist George Stephanopoulos, former Secretary of State Dean Rusk, and of course famed educator Alain Leroy Locke, the first black Rhodes Scholar.

This is a HUGE deal, and every time we see a brother earning something like this, we should definitely give him his props.

So big ups, to Myron. Much respect, sho 'nuff.

Or in scholarly language: Kudos and salutations for such a stellar educational attainment, my good man.

CNN Heroes - Cast Your Vote

Filed under:

I have always liked the 'CNN Heroes' features. If you're not familiar with 'CNN Heroes' they are brief profiles of your everyday citizen of the world who has taken steps to create extraordinary and usually innovative programs that help solve a problem.

Now, there is a contest, to choose the '2008 CNN Hero of the Year.' Everyone can vote for their favorite and the winner will be revealed during a special Thanksgiving night show - 'CNN Heroes an All Star Tribute' and will receive $100,000. So it pays to be a hero too!

Have you been watching most of the news lately?

I have, but now I'm turning the volume way down and focusing on the positive stories out there.

I want my mind to absorb the stories that affirm what's possible and good about the human condition. What I know is that each of us has infinite possibilities even if we aren't aware of what they are at any given moment.

So, who's YOUR hero?

Get Your Guns … Before Obama Takes Them Away!

You don't see people running out to get guns in black communities and big cities. Why? In those neighborhoods, guns are more commonly used by criminals and cops.

The great secret behind the recent gun boom is that the majority of these guns flying off the shelves are being bought in the South and in Red States.

You might remember, when Clinton took office way back when, the EXACT same thing happened. The NRA told voters that Clinton would take everyone's guns away and used the Clinton assault weapons ban as evidence. Now, Rednecks and NRA members are maxing out their credit cards on guns and ammo again.

If that's not "clinging to your guns," I don't know what is?

Wake up people, Obama's not gonna take your guns even if he really, really wanted to.
