CNN Heroes - Cast Your Vote

Filed under:

I have always liked the 'CNN Heroes' features. If you're not familiar with 'CNN Heroes' they are brief profiles of your everyday citizen of the world who has taken steps to create extraordinary and usually innovative programs that help solve a problem.

Now, there is a contest, to choose the '2008 CNN Hero of the Year.' Everyone can vote for their favorite and the winner will be revealed during a special Thanksgiving night show - 'CNN Heroes an All Star Tribute' and will receive $100,000. So it pays to be a hero too!

Have you been watching most of the news lately?

I have, but now I'm turning the volume way down and focusing on the positive stories out there.

I want my mind to absorb the stories that affirm what's possible and good about the human condition. What I know is that each of us has infinite possibilities even if we aren't aware of what they are at any given moment.

So, who's YOUR hero ?

Get Your Guns … Before Obama Takes Them Away!

You don't see people running out to get guns in black communities and big cities. Why? In those neighborhoods, guns are more commonly used by criminals and cops.

The great secret behind the recent gun boom is that the majority of these guns flying off the shelves are being bought in the South and in Red States.

You might remember, when Clinton took office way back when, the EXACT same thing happened. The NRA told voters that Clinton would take everyone's guns away and used the Clinton assault weapons ban as evidence. Now, Rednecks and NRA members are maxing out their credit cards on guns and ammo again.

If that's not "clinging to your guns," I don't know what is?

Wake up people, Obama's not gonna take your guns even if he really, really wanted to.

Obama: The Need to Separate Church and State

Here is an example of why President-elect Barack Obama may be the perfect fit for a country too often swayed by religious bias. In this video from June 2006, he explains his religious perspective and comments on the... gasp , dangers of sectarianism!!! For those who still question his religious association, this video is for you.

Some highlights from his speech include:

"Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translates their concerns into universal rather than religion-specific values. What do I mean by this? It requires that their proposals be subject to argument and amenable to reason"

"I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, to take one example, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I can't simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all. Now this is going to be difficult for some who believe in the inerrancy of the Bible as many evangelicals do. But in a pluralistic society, we have no choice."

As far as I'm concerned, Obama's speech should be applied across the board (I'm talking to you Californians who overturned Proposition 8 ). While we're at it, the Ten Commandments should not be displayed in judicial buildings, there shouldn't be prayer in schools, and the United States shouldn't be governed by individuals whose actions are dictated by their religious inclinations. Imagine that...

Power to The People @ Change.gov

After you finish reading this, I suggest that you head on over to Change.gov , President-elect Barack Obama's official Web site.

As you might expect, its design is clean and easy to navigate. On it you will find information about the Obama administration's agenda, the inauguration, news headlines and all sorts of information related to the transition now in progress.

But most intriguing to me, is that if you would like to work for the Obama administration, Change.gov is where you sign up to begin the process. Go to Change.gov , click on ' Jobs' and then, fill in your information. ...

Another program of interest is the "America Serves" initiative :

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation's challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in under served schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps.

If Obama is being described as the first "internet President," then we are surely the first "internet electorate." This ease of access to my soon-to-be Executive Branch excites me.

Michelle Obama Tops Power List - We Pick ‘Em, You Rank ‘Em

History was made this week with one of the most important elections in our nation's history. It proved the power of voting and that true democracy means exercising the power of the vote. On that note, BlackVoices also wants your vote. Each week we compile a list of individuals (some famous and some not) that we think have wielded power in their own fields that week.

Since you may disagree with some of our rankings, we decided to make the Power List interactive -- so you can tell us how you'd rank our choices. Check out the "This Week's List" to the right of this posting.

Aside from the historic election of the first black president, British Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton is now a world champion. Last Sunday Hamilton came in fifth place at the Brazilian Grand Prix securing the world champion title making the youngest to ever win it and the only Black man to ever hold the title.

Michelle Obama will soon be the first lady of the United States. Enough said. That's power right there.

David Alan Grier, a comedian, is starring in the new Comedy show on Comedy Central called "Chocolate News." What do you think of it? Samuel L. Jackson is staring along Bernie Mac in the new comedy movie Soul Men. Jackson obviously has the power to be in every single move that comes out ever.

You might not know Cynthia McKinney, but she is the leader of the Green Party and presidential candidate in this year's election and a powerful female political figure of the future. We want to give her props for going against Barack, despite being overshadowed and hanging in there to the end.

Obama Inauguration Ticket Info

Last night, I booked my flight to Washington, DC so that I will be in place for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration. I don't have tickets to any events yet, but to be present for such a momentous occasion is irresistible. To top it all off, I am from DC and my mom still lives there. There is no way I would allow her to have all the fun to herself.

Tickets for the inauguration ARE FREE and are being distributed by each congressional office on a first come first served basis. You must CALL THE OFFICE and request one or two tickets. Please note that many offices around the country are closing their lists TODAY.

You can find out who your congressional representative is by clicking this link.

If you need to find out you Zip + 4 click on this link .The Seattle Post Intelligencer has a great article entitled: 'Want to go to Obama's inauguration? 5 things you need to know':
Keep an eye out for ticket scams , like this site. Scam!

McAlvanah forwarded a press release from the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies warning residents nationwide to be wary of rogue Web sites that claim to have inaugural tickets. They don't. The committee assures all tickets for the swearing-in ceremony a) will be distributed by congressional offices b) won't be available for in-person pickup until a week before the ceremony and c) will be free. The press release didn't name any scam site already out there, but if you see anything that looks too easy, it probably is.
I will call today. Hope to see you there!

Soulja Boy Salutes Slave Masters - Seriously?

http://www.aolcdn.com/ch_bv/soulja_boy_main_132.jpg Some time ago conservative pundit and author Pat Buchanan was roundly and correctly criticized for saying that black Americans who are descendants of slaves, should be thankful that their ancestors were sold into a life of bondage, torture and oppression.

Buchanan's belief presumes that the only way that blacks would have found a way to America would have been on a slave ship and that the slave thing was a net benefit to many of us.

Apparently, Souljah Boy believes the same thing. According to Toure via 'The Daily Beast' website :

Then came Soulja Boy Tell Em. I asked him, "What historical figure do you most hate?" He was stumped. I said, "Others have said Hitler, bin Laden, the slave masters ..." He said, "Oh wait! Hold up! Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we'd still be in Africa."

My jaw, at this point, was on the ground. "We wouldn't be here," he continued , having no idea how far in it he'd stepped, "to get this ice and tattoos."

Ice and tattoos.

What to say?

I am wondering if that is the most ignorant comment I've ever heard. Maybe not it ... but close.

Seriously, I'm betting that some agree with Souljah Boy's assessment of slavery's impact on the black community. I, on the other hand, always consider what Africa might have looked like if millions of our ancestors had not been dragged from the continent.

My friend Tyler is a little more blunt about it.

Good Ol’ Jack?

Filed under:

According to History.com ...

People have been making jack o'lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth ... ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."

Who Are You Supposed to Be?

Filed under:

Also according to History.com ...

The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

New Inspiration to Vote from Seal, Via Sam Cooke

By Alexis Garrett Stodghill, BlackVoices.com

Seal has covered the 1964 soul classic, 'A Change Is Gonna Come.' Originally written and performed by R&B legend Sam Cooke , this sweet, sad, yet inspiring song has been used as a political theme for many campaigns, marches and demonstrations. Its eternally stirring chords give people hope for a better future despite whatever deserts of despair one has crossed, or may have to endure.

Above is Seal's new version. Below, a video with the original version by Sam Cooke. Both are interlaced with historical images and imploring words that unite both renditions into one message: Vote. We have earned it.

Campaign Scare Tactics

The presidential election is just days away and everything is a talking point. With one campaign thoroughly entrenched in desperation tactics and another engaged in maintaining a widening lead, the rhetoric has been decidedly one-sided over the last few months.

Most recently, the favorite and most convenient issue the McCain-Palin campaign has vanguarded has been Barack Obama 's connection to former domestic terrorist William Ayers. His alleged association continues to be brought up despite evidence to the contrary. The irony is that the Ayers topic continues to trudge along while McCain's friendship with G. Gordon Liddy is treated as an afterthought by his campaign as well as the media.

Earlier in the campaign season, a more effective attack on Obama was his connection to Jeremiah Wright, which was fairly substantial. Of course, with economic issues so prominent on the American mind, those sub-issues have become less relevant.

So with time winding down in a bitter election, the McCain-Palin ticket are going to ride their scare tactics until the wheels falls off; whether that be Joe the Plumber, Bill Ayers, or Ashley Todd. The question is where do you draw the line on the connection game when you have people at your own rallies shouting everything from "terrorist" to "kill him" to the n-word.

Where's the repudiation or apology from McCain or Palin? More than anything this shows the triviality of holding candidates responsible for other people's actions when there's no accountability within your own campaign.

If your're not convinced, check out these other videos...

Why Do You Have to Be 18 to Vote?

I've long been an advocate of lowering the voting age. To me it never made any sense that 18 years old is supposed to be this magical threshold where you're suddenly able to make decisions that will affect the future of your community or nation, but being 17 isn't.

In fact younger people are in at least as good a position to make voting decisions because politicians institute policies that will largely determine what society will be like in coming years. So why shouldn't a 14-year-old have a say in city budget cuts that might impact his senior year in high school.

Well, I doubt the 26th amendment will be changed anytime soon, but at least some young people get the picture and have gotten into the process. Even these seventh graders at Atlanta's Ron Clark Academy get it.

Requiem for a Pimp - Rudy Ray Moore Dies

They say death comes in threes.

First Bernie Mac , comic royalty. Then musical sex machine Issac Hayes , who passed on just a couple days later. Now culture commentator the Undercover Black Man reports the man whose confidence and style merged both of them and everyone else from Pee Wee Kirkland to Denzel Washington has left us for that great Players' Ball in the sky.

Dolemite himself, Mr. Rudy Ray Moore died Sunday from complications of diabetes. He was 71. ...

Now, many of you may be too young to remember just how badass this dude was, how his attitude defined the black male take-no-shit swagger of the 70s, how his exaggerated, hypersexual pimpoliciousness and braggodocio was the stuff of comic legend. If Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx's material was considered so raunchy, your parents would only play it during blue-light parties in the basement, Moore's jokes could only be told in nightclubs where ears are not so easily stung by such acid profanity.

It's too bad another generation won't get to be inspired by such silly soul-flavored badassishness. But here's a sample of what you've missed. Right on, Rudy Ray. RIP

Putting On Our American Hats - Gustav And The GOP

The Republican National Convention kicked off with prominent party members wrapped in earnestness and widespread Gustav Gulf Coast weather worries.

The ever charming First Lady Laura Bush kicked off the convention with an address to the delegates that focused more on service to those impacted by Gustav than on wrangling power. Mrs. Bush started off by emphasizing the theme for today - support for the people in the Gulf Coast hit by Hurricane Gustav. She introduced messages from governors of the states affected by the storm - Texas, Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama. Then Cindy McCain spoke standing next to Bush and echoed a similar message.

Listening to them I had to ask myself "why does it take a natural catastrophe for prominent Republicans to remind us to 'remember that we are all Americans' and that 'this is a time when we take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats'"?

I for one always walk around in my "American" hat, but NOT the one pictured above. ...
I guess that's why I don't have to actually experience poverty, inadequate education opportunities, lack of living wage job opportunities, lack of police protection or police brutality to be a strong advocate for those situations to be remedied.

Hopefully, the increased attention to social service agencies responding to Gustav's destruction will translate into increased funds and supplies that will make it directly to the people needing help the most.

We are ALL in this together. Please help a little, a lot if you can.

Denver not Rome: they’re just columns people

Sometimes I swear the media is like a hungry dog following the scent of a blood rare steak. They seem to gulp down anything that's fed to them by the Republican spin machine. It started yesterday with failed Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani yammering on about Obama putting up "Roman Columns." Yes, you guessed it. Giuliani and the anchors laughed about "Obama as Ceasar" calling the Mile High Stadium set the "Temple of Doom." Funny, but so dumb. Every Federal building with any gravitas (and many without it) sport those columns. I'm born and bred in Washington, DC. I know this.

So where was all this chattering when George Bush had exactly the same kind of columns as a backdrop for his 2004 acceptance speech?

See for yourself:I know the right has pegged Obama with the "aloof" "Messiah" tag, but that does not mean he has to respond to it. Those are not his voters anyway.

I can't control what you call me, but I can control what I answer to.
