Newspaper Steals Empire State Building

It took just 90 minutes for journalists at the New York Daily News to "steal" the Empire State Building. As part of an investigation into a loophole that doesn't require clerks to verify information, the journalists transferred the building's ownership deed with a forged notary stamp. The buyer? Nelots Properties. Nelots reads "stolen" backwards. Fay Wray — star of the original King Kong movie — was listed as a witness. The paper fessed up and returned the landmark building the next day.

Soldier’s Heir Returns Marble Fragment To Greece

A piece of the Parthenon has come home. During theWorld War Two occupation of Greece, an Austrian soldier took a marble fragment from a frieze in the ancient temple above Athens. His granddaughter, who inherited the stolen treasure, returned it this week. Greece is fighting to get back more of the Parthenon — the Elgin Marbles — from the British Museum. Still, it welcomed this small piece as a symbolic return.

Big, Small Home Builders Feel Housing Pinch

Smaller home builders — like Florida's Chuck Fowke — are going out of business, while large companies are cutting back. The industry wants any federal stimulus package to include new incentives for homebuyers. But analysts say the industry won't begin to rebound without a decrease in home builders and inventory.

Saudi Supertanker Hijacked By Somali Pirates

Somali pirates seized a supertanker carrying $100 million worth of Saudi oil Saturday. The ship — which is three times the size of an aircraft carrier — was nearly 500 miles off Africa's coast when it was hijacked in waters patrolled by foreign navies. Its 25 crew members are being held hostage.

Foreign Bank To Issue Diamond-Inlaid Credit Card

The central Asian country of Kazakhstan recently had to bail out its biggest banks. Now one bank plans to issue a credit card called Diamond. This new MasterCard is inlaid with a diamond and has a credit limit of $50,000. The annual fee is $1,000 —though the cardholder gets a full-time personal manager.
