CNN Heroes - Cast Your Vote

Filed under:

I have always liked the 'CNN Heroes' features. If you're not familiar with 'CNN Heroes' they are brief profiles of your everyday citizen of the world who has taken steps to create extraordinary and usually innovative programs that help solve a problem.

Now, there is a contest, to choose the '2008 CNN Hero of the Year.' Everyone can vote for their favorite and the winner will be revealed during a special Thanksgiving night show - 'CNN Heroes an All Star Tribute' and will receive $100,000. So it pays to be a hero too!

Have you been watching most of the news lately?

I have, but now I'm turning the volume way down and focusing on the positive stories out there.

I want my mind to absorb the stories that affirm what's possible and good about the human condition. What I know is that each of us has infinite possibilities even if we aren't aware of what they are at any given moment.

So, who's YOUR hero ?

Get Your Guns … Before Obama Takes Them Away!

You don't see people running out to get guns in black communities and big cities. Why? In those neighborhoods, guns are more commonly used by criminals and cops.

The great secret behind the recent gun boom is that the majority of these guns flying off the shelves are being bought in the South and in Red States.

You might remember, when Clinton took office way back when, the EXACT same thing happened. The NRA told voters that Clinton would take everyone's guns away and used the Clinton assault weapons ban as evidence. Now, Rednecks and NRA members are maxing out their credit cards on guns and ammo again.

If that's not "clinging to your guns," I don't know what is?

Wake up people, Obama's not gonna take your guns even if he really, really wanted to.

Power to The People @ Change.gov

After you finish reading this, I suggest that you head on over to Change.gov , President-elect Barack Obama's official Web site.

As you might expect, its design is clean and easy to navigate. On it you will find information about the Obama administration's agenda, the inauguration, news headlines and all sorts of information related to the transition now in progress.

But most intriguing to me, is that if you would like to work for the Obama administration, Change.gov is where you sign up to begin the process. Go to Change.gov , click on ' Jobs' and then, fill in your information. ...

Another program of interest is the "America Serves" initiative :

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation's challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in under served schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps.

If Obama is being described as the first "internet President," then we are surely the first "internet electorate." This ease of access to my soon-to-be Executive Branch excites me.

Obama Inauguration Ticket Info

Last night, I booked my flight to Washington, DC so that I will be in place for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration. I don't have tickets to any events yet, but to be present for such a momentous occasion is irresistible. To top it all off, I am from DC and my mom still lives there. There is no way I would allow her to have all the fun to herself.

Tickets for the inauguration ARE FREE and are being distributed by each congressional office on a first come first served basis. You must CALL THE OFFICE and request one or two tickets. Please note that many offices around the country are closing their lists TODAY.

You can find out who your congressional representative is by clicking this link.

If you need to find out you Zip + 4 click on this link .The Seattle Post Intelligencer has a great article entitled: 'Want to go to Obama's inauguration? 5 things you need to know':
Keep an eye out for ticket scams , like this site. Scam!

McAlvanah forwarded a press release from the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies warning residents nationwide to be wary of rogue Web sites that claim to have inaugural tickets. They don't. The committee assures all tickets for the swearing-in ceremony a) will be distributed by congressional offices b) won't be available for in-person pickup until a week before the ceremony and c) will be free. The press release didn't name any scam site already out there, but if you see anything that looks too easy, it probably is.

Soulja Boy Salutes Slave Masters - Seriously?

http://www.aolcdn.com/ch_bv/soulja_boy_main_132.jpg Some time ago conservative pundit and author Pat Buchanan was roundly and correctly criticized for saying that black Americans who are descendants of slaves, should be thankful that their ancestors were sold into a life of bondage, torture and oppression.

Buchanan's belief presumes that the only way that blacks would have found a way to America would have been on a slave ship and that the slave thing was a net benefit to many of us.

Apparently, Souljah Boy believes the same thing. According to Toure via 'The Daily Beast' website :

Then came Soulja Boy Tell Em. I asked him, "What historical figure do you most hate?" He was stumped. I said, "Others have said Hitler, bin Laden, the slave masters ..." He said, "Oh wait! Hold up! Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we'd still be in Africa."

My jaw, at this point, was on the ground. "We wouldn't be here," he continued , having no idea how far in it he'd stepped, "to get this ice and tattoos."

Ice and tattoos.

What to say?

I am wondering if that is the most ignorant comment I've ever heard. Maybe not it ... but close.

Seriously, I'm betting that some agree with Souljah Boy's assessment of slavery's impact on the black community. I, on the other hand, always consider what Africa might have looked like if millions of our ancestors had not been dragged from the continent.

My friend Tyler is a little more blunt about it.

Good Ol’ Jack?

Filed under:

According to History.com ...

People have been making jack o'lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth ... ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."

Who Are You Supposed to Be?

Filed under:

Also according to History.com ...

The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

New Inspiration to Vote from Seal, Via Sam Cooke

By Alexis Garrett Stodghill, BlackVoices.com

Seal has covered the 1964 soul classic, 'A Change Is Gonna Come.' Originally written and performed by R&B legend Sam Cooke , this sweet, sad, yet inspiring song has been used as a political theme for many campaigns, marches and demonstrations. Its eternally stirring chords give people hope for a better future despite whatever deserts of despair one has crossed, or may have to endure.

Above is Seal's new version. Below, a video with the original version by Sam Cooke. Both are interlaced with historical images and imploring words that unite both renditions into one message: Vote. We have earned it.

Why Do You Have to Be 18 to Vote?

I've long been an advocate of lowering the voting age. To me it never made any sense that 18 years old is supposed to be this magical threshold where you're suddenly able to make decisions that will affect the future of your community or nation, but being 17 isn't.

In fact younger people are in at least as good a position to make voting decisions because politicians institute policies that will largely determine what society will be like in coming years. So why shouldn't a 14-year-old have a say in city budget cuts that might impact his senior year in high school.

Well, I doubt the 26th amendment will be changed anytime soon, but at least some young people get the picture and have gotten into the process. Even these seventh graders at Atlanta's Ron Clark Academy get it.

Terry Tate Returns With A Message for Sarah Palin

For those of you who avidly follow Superbowl commercials, you'll may remember the emergence of the terrorizing office line backer known as Terry Tate . Well like any good marketing promotion, Terry enjoyed some success with some additional viral Youtube, but nothing as large as his initial splash.

Now with the election around the corner, and electricity in the air, what better way to usher in the return of a man who tackles people who don't have office decorum then to have him 'speak' to John McCain's vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin .

What do you think? Does he get his message across?

Why Obama Visited His Grandmother

By Alexis Garrett Stodghill, BlackVoices.com

Obama visiting his grandmother towards the end of his heated campaign has inspired both love and suspicion of him from differing sides of the political divide. Some have wondered what McCain would do in this situation, if his mother was sick, given the fact that he, unlike Obama, is actually behind.

Do you think this action by Obama says something about his character? If so, what?
