Liberals voice concerns about Obama
Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson Gets the Boot
Filed under: BlackSpin , Politics , News
Well it hasn't exactly been a very good year for black politicians who find themselves in trouble. Voters and prosecutors seem to have seen the Marion Berry movie and don't want a sequel. First, former Newark mayor Sharpe James gets a 27-month bid in the Federal clink on fraud charges; then Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick gets sent up for 120-days in a plea deal stemming from a perjury conviction linked to a City Hall freaky-deak scandal that also cost him his job.
Now, after all that, voters in Louisiana have decided to put Rep. William Jefferson , the Democrat who federal agents say they caught with $90,000 in ill-gotten gains inside his freezer, out of his misery too. Instead voters, primarily in Jefferson's district already plagued with violent crime and beleaguered by the continuing recovery from Hurricane Katrina, elected Vietnamese-American Republican Anh "Joseph" Cao instead, who will be the first Vietnamese-American in Congress. ...
From what I can see, this black political downfall three-pointer symbolizes a sea change in who represents our communities and what we demand from them. It's looking like an old guard and old guard mentality is gone -- one of being able to attain power through the Black Slate without being accountable for one's transgressions. Simply being re-elected through the endorsement of preachers and the votes of senior citizens won't cut it.
What it's being replaced with is a new generation of black politicos who know how to show a paper trail and get their much-needed votes from all corners. Two really good examples are James' replacement Newark Mayor Cory Booker , who is credited with a dramatic decrease in homicides in the city; and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick , that state's first black governor.
There will probably be more to come because a Democratic takeover in Congress, coupled with a Barack Obama presidency will likely encourage more grass-roots enthusiasm and encourage more young, ambitious black would-be reps, senators and presidents to take the plunge.
As for Jefferson, he's likely movin' on down, because he's still got to fight his indictment on bribery and fraud charges. The trial was scheduled for Dec. 2, but was postponed until an unnamed date in 2009 . He pleaded not guilty last year, and had early support, but a combination of House Democrats shunning him, lack of funding and Hurricane Gustav delaying the election until last weekend, pretty much sealed his fate.
The real loser is black political representation in New Orleans. Not that Cao may not be just what the district needs, but it was originally drawn for the purpose of giving political power to blacks. This is a very delicate situation because not only did Hurricane Katrina decimate black folk in New Orleans physically, but politically as well. What they need is someone who will understand and represent their needs directly and there is no guarantee that will happen.
In the end, if black folk want black representation, not only must we actually go vote ( which proudly, we did overwhelmingly this election cycle ), but we also have to vote in accountable politicians. Kilpatrick, James, and Jefferson seem to point to examples of public servants who have been accused of corruption and have for so long never had to answer for it until now.

What is Spirituality? Here’s One Possible Answer.
Spirituality means many things to many people. Answering the question of “what is spirituality” for yourself is an important step in your lifelong process of discovery.
To be honest, you don’t need to become an expert in terminology to enjoy a life of meaning and fulfillment. The words are just pointers and tools you can use to uncover your personal direction.
So this article is only one possible answer to the question of “what is spirituality?” If these words resonate with your heart, expand upon them; if not, move on and find something else that feels right to you.
True spirituality has nothing to do with religious practice. The observance of specific belief systems, honoring of certain holy days & customs, and living by a set code of conduct are not spiritual pursuits in and of themselves.
These and other things can be part of an individual’s overall spirituality. But group values systems and traditional behaviors are no more spiritual than political affiliations or loyalty to a college football team.
Spirituality is a very personal matter. And it’s completely experiential, meaning it must be experienced before it can be fully understood.
Having said all this, what’s left to answer? I’ve carried on for half a page about what spirituality is not; so what is it then?
Spirituality is a basic awareness of higher consciousness, and an allowing of the present moment to be what it is.
I could refine this statement by saying: one is spiritual when he or she is aware of a collective, creative consciousness that operates beyond the ego mind. Also, spiritual living involves the practice of being mindful in the moment, and allowing the now to take on a life of its own beyond individual desires to shape events.
This statement is intentionally open for interpretation. While I’ve captured the essence of what I believe spirituality to be, I have refrained from providing a definition heavy with my own personal preferences.
When you know intelligence exists beyond the part of your mind “containing” your identity and personal sense of self, you are being spiritual. When you say “yes” to the present moment, allowing the senses to perceive what they will and making no effort to control what is with your own preference and prejudice, you are being spiritual.
Knowing a great intelligence exists, but making no effort to label it in a way that comforts you, is an act of wisdom. It takes great fortitude to be content with the idea of not necessarily understanding or controlling the world around you.
Also being completely alert in the present moment, rather than hiding from yourself in thoughts of the past and future, requires a steadfast nature. Humanity is not afraid of its alleged weakness and frailty; rather, we are afraid of our own incredible power, thus we hide our faces from it by living in the past and the future most of our lives.
It’s not my intention to slander religion. But I am compelled to warn that many faiths were developed to crush the spiritual nature of their followers.
People are often outraged by any definition of spirituality that omits the vengeful, all-knowing god who exists to protect and punish them. It’s a bizarre phenomenon, and it’s the result of centuries of conditioning and brainwash.
By all means take this article as my opinion. But it’s an opinion based on life experience and an honest search for the truth.
I make no effort to appease the values of others or to detract from another’s point of view. And it’s my sincere hope that I have at least planted the seed of an answer that can be harvested by those who are seeking.

Getting a Mortgage With Bad Credit
If you have bad credit, don’t worry. You can still get a mortgage thanks to those companies specialize in high risk mortgage loans for people with bad credit. So, you don’t have to worry about being turned down by banks for getting a mortgage. The reason why most banks reject applications by people with bad credit simply because they need you to have a reliable credit history and since you have a bad credit history, that doesn’t help at all. To make things worse, if you don’t get a mortgage as soon as possible, you might have to live off the streets. At the present time it is very difficult to get organization that give you these facilities but some are still there but the norms are pretty strict.
Although you have the option to clean up your credit record but it will take a long time to do so. There is no way you can clean up everything by the time you need a mortgage. However, with the advancement of the changing times, the rules have been more relaxed especially on giving loans to those with bad credit. Usually the lenders will mix and match the requirements according to the credit history. Most of the time, it would be lower down payment but higher rates. This is definitely better plan for people with bad credit. You should always take care that things do not go wrong as it can land you up in deep mess, which will be dangerous even for your health.
If you are interested in getting a mortgage for people with bad credit, be sure to seek the professional’s advice. They will talk you through the steps and guide you through the applications. Of course, you will need to understand everything about getting the loan, the loan interest and repayment rate. You will need to make sure you are able to repay the monthly repayment on time to avoid even worse credit history. As long as you can follow these guidelines, there is no reason why you cannot achieve financial freedom. You just need to practice and exercise self control especially in spending money. You should not waste too much of money for things that are not required. There are people who do not have control on their spending and always get into mess for this reason so be careful and always expect value for money.
Don’t be discouraged if you can’t find a mortgage right away solely based on your credit. Instead, try and focus on the more important things like raising that credit score. If you can raise that score, you’ll be able to get a house with a great interest rate. Remember, a house with a lower interest rate can literally save you thousands every year. So, if you think a thousand dollars is a lot to you, I would suggest you look into raising your score. With today’s bad economy, you’re going to find that lenders aren’t going to give out money like they used to. Treat it like a lesson and learn from your mistakes.

Registered Retirement Savings Plans - Canada’s Generous Secret
RRSP or Registered Retirement Plans are one of the few major spiffs that Canadians get. Day in day out , year after year its as if Canadians like to pay taxes – all for the “free health care” and various services that they require doled out by the most appreciative public civil servants and their various levels of administration and bureaucracies .. It’s seldom that Canadians get many bones thrown in their way free of charge, that are of to their great benefit from their government agencies.
In the way of benefits to citizens there are few other governments and their tax agencies thought-out the worlds that are as generous as in this case. Canadians are allowed to deduct a given percentage of their income free of charge to save for their retirement. Those lucky few who take advantage of the Registered Retirement Saving Plan legislation and rules not only are able to deduct this income from their bottom line taxable income, but also to thus reduce their top level taxes that they pay income tax on.
Better than that the saver ( or investor) is allowed to accumulate this pool of fund , towards their retirement savings , with no income charges assessed , until the point the citizen withdraws funds to fund their retirement lifestyle. A match made in heaven.
Not only does the fund and savings grow rapidly, as it cannot be touched and lies growing a growing with compound interest – but also it is the full amount of interest.
The real interest rate is much higher than what is quoted at the bank or with bonds or other financial instruments as income tax is not deducted during this time period so that full interest rates are involved in the capital money’s growth not a net figure which would incorporate a major hit due to the taxes taken – income taxes on interest earned plus perhaps additional taxes and charges. It’s a win win situation for the taxpayer for once.
What are the basic rules, steps and procedures Canadians show know of and follow with RRSP planning and follow through. First know your contribution limit and contribution allotment that you have up to this point in time. RRSP contribution limits are clearly stated on your notice of assessment from Revenue Canada. The contribution limit will be based on a combination of a value calculated from your last years ( not this years) income as stated by yourself in your tax return that you just completed , and secondly a carryover from any unused contributions in previous years. The amount that you are allowed to contribute is an addition of the two figures up to a general percentage of your income.
Next know the deadline for contributions. You would be more than amazed at how many people leave both their contributions to the very last minute. Plan ahead both to contribute throughout the year and as well make your final contribution long before the last minute rush. By contributing late you may have to scrape up cash you had for this purpose of your retirement saving contribution but somehow spent along the path. You most likely will contribute more as a result if you contribute early, often and throughout the year rather than one single lump sum towards the end of the deadline.
Some people actually end up borrowing money from the bank figuring that the tax savings they will receive more than pay for the bank interest charges that they will pay.
Worse yet by waiting for the last moment, it may be hard to obtain an appointment from your financial institution, agent or financial advisor. Worse yet the service will most likely be more rushed and on top of that not only will you have less time, or no time, to discuss and decide on your options but as well your full range of investment options may be much more limited than otherwise. It pays and is much less stressful to make your RRSP contributions early and throughout the year rather than in one single shot close or at the calendar deadline dates.
RRSPs for Canadians are a marvelous tool for retirement fund income creation and savings. If there are two words of advice they can be to ascertain your correct contribution maximum limits firstly. Secondly plan to save and contribute to your RRSP Registered Retirement Saving Plan early, often and throughout the year.

How You will not Make Money in Real Estate
We all have seen some book called “How I Turned my last dollar into $1 Million by buying real estate in my spare time”. Some of us even bought such books on an impulse with high expectations.
They all start about the same: “I had been young, unemployed and I used borrowed money to buy a foreclosed apartment, which no one wanted to touch with a ten foot pole. Actually the bank was ready to give a full price loan to anyone, who would be foolish enough to take this disaster out of their hands.”
Guess what? The lucky buyer painted the apartment bright green and it immediately sold to the next fool for $50,000 more. You don’t believe him? Me neither. But check the Internet and you will find plenty of sites teaching you how to flip houses for an instant profit by painting their doors in “happy” colors.
Before you ran out searching for foreclosed apartments badly in need of painting, have patience and finish this article. Most of such books are variations of the popular book series of the 19th century - “How you can become a Happy Millionaire”.
They all use primitive hypnotic techniques to fool their readers. They start with: “Your mind will change and grow, slowly and steadily with every page you read. With every thought and insight you gain, your desire and courage will grow as well.”
The wild success of such techniques was attributed to the low levels of education of the reading public 150 years ago. Well, we should think again. Look at the amount of books Robert Kiyosaki is selling. His Rich Dad Poor Dad series are great in persuading you about the need to make money, but fall short on particulars about how exactly you can achieve that.
Despite an attempt to put an entertaining face to the age-old scam, most of those books’ techniques are surprisingly similar. They all have this line in common: “Since every millionaire started with a desire to become rich, you must develop a burning desire for money as well. And write this down, have a plan. Once you wrote down a plan, you are half-way there.”
That course of action remains me of a poor Jewish matchmaker in some remote village in Russia in the 19th century. There was a nice old maid in this village. She had a heart of gold, but was not a great beauty, so no one wanted her. The matchmaker decided that she needs his help. Whom should she marry? The King of England was widowed recently, so he was obviously in search of a spouse. A perfect combination.
The matchmaker spoke with the elders of the village, and they all agreed that it might be a good idea. Than he spoke with the maiden herself, and she also reluctantly agreed. Well, said the happy matchmaker rubbing his hands, half the work is done.
When you hear how easy it is to make money by flipping houses, you should realize that even if some of those stories are true, they are highly selective. They are not representative of the real-life situations. Those books are always telling that you can make a fortune by finding stupid sellers, whom you can swindle out of their money.
There is always a seller in those books, who so badly wants to get out of his house that he is ready to accept half the price. In real life, if the sellers are willing to sell for half price, that means the area around the house is in bad economic situation. There are no jobs in this area or there is a rising crime wave, so most residents want to move out and very few want to move in.
If this seller had a chance to sell for more, do you think he would accept your offer for a half price? Most probably he thinks that a next offer might be even lower. If you will try to sell his house for more, do you think you can fix all its problems by just painting it?
Whoever is trying to sell you such simplistic view of the Real Estate investing, doesn’t have your best interests in mind. He is tricking you into buying his books, and he is using the psychological trickster techniques. Most such techniques work on the subliminal level. That means that they can trick you only as long as you are not aware of them.
Now, if you want some self-help book to make you feel better, there is nothing wrong with buying Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad Poor Dad books series. It might even alleviate your boredom for an evening or two.
But if you want to preserve the value of your investments, or make some money for your retirement, realize that those books are poor substitute for a real learning. In order to make heavy financial decisions, you will need much more than a pep-up talk.
We all need some reassurance here and there. If hypnotic self-help books can provide it to us, so much for the better. As long as you don’t start to gamble your life’s savings using the advices found in those books.

Diesel Smoke Can Be Worse Than Regular Gas
Diesel fire and the fumes from these types of fires are harder on us than most other fires because the fumes are more toxic to us. As diesel smoke is linked to cancer-causing chemicals like arsenic, benzene, and formaldehyde, which are all in diesel fuel, the toxic fumes on our bodies inside and out are extremely higher than most of the fires that might get started by regular gasoline. All types of gas fires are bad, but they say that a fire from diesel is the worst.
If you work in a place that has equipment run by diesel, you are better off to make sure that you aren’t in the path of the fumes that are coming off of this machine and if you do happen to get in the line of these fumes, then you should have the good sense to move out of its way and not stay in the path and not to stand there and breathe the fumes. It won’t take long for these fumes to overcome your lungs, and this will do major damage to your lungs and it will make you pass out. These fumes will make your lungs close to try to protect them from this foreign matter, which in turn will cause you to faint from lack of oxygen. If this is a good length of time, it will start to kill off your organs and will also kill you. All of this can happen in a matter of minutes.
If you work in a fire station where all of the trucks use diesel fuel to run on, you will need to use extra care as not to be in the fumes’ path and try to be out of the line of its fire, so to speak, or by the doors so that you are getting the fresh air from outside.
If there are a lot of trucks that are run out of this building, it is better for the trucks to be parked outside the building and to have them started out of the building. If this isn’t possible, then at least try to have the running time set a very low amount of time. Also make sure that they have good ventilation systems in place to help with the removal of these fumes.
The companies that are using these diesel run machines will need to make sure that the exhaust pipes and the filters are changed as often as required by law and that they keep records of these changes.
